Tox — short for neurotoxin — works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, the chemical signal that tells a muscle to contract [1][2][3], so the lines you make when you frown, squint, or raise your brows soften. All three products we carry at Bare.co Skin Health and Medical Spa are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A. Individual results vary.

How does tox work?

Botulinum toxin type A binds to acceptor sites on motor nerve terminals, enters the nerve ending, and cleaves a protein called SNAP-25 [2]. That interrupts acetylcholine release, so the treated muscle contracts less and the skin over it creases less [1][2]. The effect is temporary — nerve signaling returns and movement comes back [10].

Tox works best on dynamic wrinkles, the ones you see when the muscle moves; static lines visible at rest respond less dramatically [9]. Lines that sit in the skin at rest are usually better addressed with dermal fillers or collagen biostimulators and PRF, and surface texture with skin treatments.

Which tox brands does Bare.co carry?

All three are botulinum toxin type A, all three are FDA-approved for temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines — the vertical "11s" between the brows — associated with procerus and corrugator muscle activity (Dysport) or corrugator and/or procerus muscle activity (Jeuveau and Daxxify), and every label directs retreatment no more often than every three months [1][2][3].

One point matters most: units are not interchangeable between brands. Each product's units are specific to its own preparation and assay method and cannot be converted to another's [1][2][3]. Fifty units of one product is not "more" than twenty of another.

Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA)

Approved for glabellar lines in adults under 65; labeled dose 50 units total, as five equal 10-unit injections [1]. In pooled phase 3 data, responses appeared as early as 24 hours, median onset three days, with a median duration of response of 85 days on fixed 50-Unit dosing, and 109 days on variable dosing of 50-80 Units adjusted for gender and muscle mass — above the FDA-labeled 50-Unit dose [4]. The label states the effect may last up to four months [1].

Dysport is contraindicated with known hypersensitivity to cow's milk protein, and contains human albumin, which carries an extremely remote risk of transmitting viral diseases [1].

Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs)

Approved for glabellar lines in adults; labeled dose 20 units total, 4 units at each of five sites [2]. Trials measured the primary result at Day 30 [2]. In a post hoc analysis of the two US phase 3 studies (n=492), 94.0% of patients with skin of color and 96.0% of patients without had at least a 1-point improvement on the Glabellar Line Scale at Day 30 [7]. On the trials' stricter primary endpoint — a 2-point improvement agreed by both investigator and patient — responder rates were 67.5% and 70.4%, versus about 1% on placebo [2].

The Jeuveau label does not state a duration of effect; it directs retreatment no more often than every three months [2]. In a one-year repeat-dose study, patients received a median 60 units total — about three treatments a year [6].

Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm)

Approved for glabellar lines in adults, and separately for cervical dystonia; labeled glabellar dose 40 units, 8 units at each of five sites [3]. In pooled SAKURA 1 and SAKURA 2 phase 3 data, patients held none-or-mild glabellar line severity a median of 24.0 weeks — roughly five and a half months [5]. The label still directs retreatment no more often than every three months [3].

Why doesn't Bare.co carry Botox?

We stock Dysport, Jeuveau, and Daxxify rather than Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) — different branded products in the same class, whose units cannot be converted to one another's [1][2][3]; our Dysport vs. Botox comparison explains the differences plainly. If you've had Botox before, switching is reasonable: in a SAKURA program analysis, efficacy, duration of response, and tolerability were similar whether or not patients had prior botulinum toxin treatment [8].

What does $13 per Unit mean?

Our $13 per Unit price is per Botox-equivalent Unit. Dysport's own label doses are written in Dysport Units, a different measure, so your bill will not match the label's numbers one-for-one; your Unit count and written total are confirmed at your consultation.

You pay for the Units actually used, not a flat fee per area. Because Unit systems differ by brand [1][2][3], compare total dollars per treated area rather than dollars per Unit.

The advertised price is $13 per Unit for all three products. The labeled doses above are each manufacturer's dose for one treated area, not a service price: your dose may differ, and your Unit count and written total are confirmed at your consultation, before anything is injected. What about forehead lines and crow's feet?

None of these three is FDA-approved for horizontal forehead lines or crow's feet — their labeled cosmetic indication is glabellar lines only [1][2][3]. Treating other areas is off-label: legal, common in aesthetic practice, and something you deserve to be told plainly.

Unit counts there aren't standardized. Expert consensus favors assessing each face at rest and during animation and tailoring dose to that person's muscle pattern rather than using a template [13], and dosing to modulate muscle activity rather than fully paralyze it [12].

What happens at a tox appointment?

Christylynn Vu, FNP-BC (a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center), who began her career in medical dermatology and serves on the SKMD Medical Team for Allergan Medical Institute, performs all injectable treatments at Bare.co. Brandyn Dunn, MD, is the practice's Medical Director.

Your provider reviews your history and goals — tell us about blood thinners, supplements, past injectables, and all medications [11]. We assess your face at rest and in expression [13], then map injection points. Injections use a very fine needle; they may sting, but the injecting is quick [10]. Most people notice change within a few days, with full effect developing over about two weeks [10][9].

Aftercare: stay upright about four hours [9][10]; don't rub, massage, or heat the treated area, since rubbing can move product where it wasn't intended [9][11]; skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours [10]; avoid alcohol and hot tubs that day [9]. Ask your prescriber about pausing aspirin or bruising-related supplements [9]. Individual results vary.

Who is not a candidate?

Tox is contraindicated with known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin product or formulation component, or infection at the injection site [1][2][3]. For Dysport, hypersensitivity to cow's milk protein is also a contraindication [1].

We do not perform any medical aesthetic treatments on pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Neuromuscular conditions. Peripheral motor neuropathic disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or neuromuscular junction disorders such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome can mean increased risk of generalized muscle weakness, severe difficulty swallowing, and respiratory compromise from typical doses [1][3]. Jeuveau's trials excluded these patients [2].
Pregnancy. No adequate and well-controlled studies for Dysport [1], no available data for Daxxify [3], insufficient data for Jeuveau [2].
Breastfeeding. No data on whether any of the three passes into human milk [1][2][3].
Other cautions in the literature: keloidal scarring, being immunocompromised, body dysmorphic disorder [9], and existing eyelid droop or weak facial muscles [10].

What are the realistic risks?

All botulinum toxin products carry a boxed warning: effects may spread from the injection area, reported hours to weeks afterward, and swallowing and breathing difficulties can be life-threatening, with reports of death [1][2][3]. Seek medical care and tell us right away about trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing.

More commonly reported in the glabellar trials:

Eyelid droop (ptosis) — 2% for Dysport (under 1% placebo) [1], 2% for Jeuveau (0% placebo) [2], 2% for Daxxify (0% placebo) [3]; 0.9% in a one-year Jeuveau repeat-dose study [6]. Ptosis is temporary and technique-dependent [9].
Headache — 6% for Daxxify versus 2% placebo [3]; 12% for Jeuveau versus 13% placebo [2].
Facial paresis — 1% for Daxxify versus 0% placebo [3].
Bruising, injection-site pain, soreness, temporary weakness in nearby muscles [9][10][11].
