Dysport is one of three botulinum toxin type A products carried at Bare.co Skin Health and Medical Spa. How does Dysport work?

Dysport inhibits the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that tells a muscle to contract, by entering the nerve ending and cleaving a protein called SNAP25 [1]. The treated muscle contracts less, so the skin folded by it creases less. The effect wears off as the neuromuscular junction recovers from SNAP25 cleavage and new nerve endings form [1].

What is Dysport approved to treat, and at what dose?

Dysport's approved cosmetic indication is glabellar lines only — those associated with procerus and corrugator muscle activity — in adults under 65 [1]. The labeled dose there is a total of 50 Units, given intramuscularly in five equal injections of 10 Units each, no more frequently than every three months [1].

How fast does Dysport work, and how long does it last?

In a pooled analysis of four phase 3 studies of abobotulinumtoxinA for glabellar lines (1,116 patients; 720 on drug, 396 on placebo), responses appeared as early as 24 hours, with a median time to onset of three days [2]. Partial softening is generally visible by the third day, and the maximum effect about two weeks after injection [3].

The label states the clinical effect may last up to four months [1]. In that same analysis, median duration of response was 85 days with fixed 50-Unit dosing and 109 days with variable dosing of 50 to 80 Units based on gender and muscle mass — at or above the FDA-labeled 50-Unit dose [2]. Individual results vary.

Are Dysport Units the same as Botox Units?

No. Dysport's potency Units are specific to its preparation and assay method, are not interchangeable with other preparations of botulinum toxin products, and cannot be compared to or converted into the Units of any other botulinum toxin product [1]. How many Units of Dysport for forehead lines or crow's feet?

We do not publish a number. Dysport is not FDA-approved for horizontal forehead lines or crow's feet — its only labeled cosmetic indication is glabellar lines [1] — so using it there is off-label: legal, common in aesthetic practice, and something you deserve to be told plainly [6][7].

With no labeled dose for those areas, no honest "standard" Unit count exists. Consensus guidance is to let individual muscle mass, anatomy, and contraction pattern guide dosing and placement [6]; treating everyone at the same points with the same doses leaves many patients with a less than optimal result [7].

What happens at a Dysport appointment in Fountain Valley?

You start with a consultation. A $100 deposit is collected when you book a consultation and is credited toward your treatment. It is forfeited for a no-show or a late cancellation — cancellations and rebooking need more than 72 hours' notice. Tell us about blood thinners, over-the-counter medicines and supplements, muscle relaxants, injected antibiotics, and any past neuromodulator treatment [5]. We assess your face at rest and in movement [6], then confirm your Unit count and written total.

The injections use a fine needle and take a few minutes. Most people notice the effect within a few days — median three days in Dysport's pooled phase 3 studies [2] — with the full effect developing over about two weeks [3].

Aftercare, per published guidance:

• Stay upright — no lying down — for about four hours [3][4].
• Do not rub or press the area; rubbing can move product where it was not intended [4][5].
• Avoid heat, heavy exercise, alcohol, and hot tubs that day [3], and skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours [4].
• Seek medical attention promptly for trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing [1].

Who is not a candidate for Dysport?

Dysport is contraindicated in people with known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin product, to cow's milk protein, or to any component of the formulation, and in anyone with an infection at the injection site [1].

• Pregnancy and breastfeeding. The label states Dysport should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, and that there are no data on the presence of Dysport in human milk [1]; clinical guidance lists both as contraindications [3]. As a matter of practice policy, we do not perform any medical aesthetic treatments on patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Neuromuscular conditions — peripheral motor neuropathic disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome. The label directs particularly close monitoring [1]; clinical guidance treats them as contraindications to cosmetic use [3].
• Existing swallowing or breathing difficulty, which can make those complications more likely [1].

Dysport contains albumin, a human blood derivative carrying an extremely remote risk of transmitting viral diseases and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease [1].

What are the realistic risks?

Dysport carries a boxed warning: effects may spread from the area of injection to produce symptoms consistent with botulinum toxin effects, and swallowing and breathing difficulties can be life threatening, with reports of death [1].

Rates in the glabellar-line trials: eyelid ptosis 2% versus under 1% with placebo; eyelid swelling 2% versus 0%; headache 9% versus 5%; injection-site pain 3% versus 2% [1]. The label directs that the recommended dose and frequency not be exceeded; higher doses raised the incidence of eyelid ptosis in trials [1]. Soreness, mild bruising, and temporary weakness of nearby muscles are also possible [5]. Individual results vary.
