What does jawline filler define?

The jawline is treated in parts, not as one line.

• The angle of the jaw — the corner below and behind the ear; volume here makes it read as a corner.
• The jaw border — the line running forward to the chin, given an edge against the neck.
• The pre-jowl sulcus — the dip in front of the jowl, smoothing the step from chin to jaw.
• The chin-to-jaw transition — the chin forms the front of that border, so we look at both together.

Filler goes just under the skin or deep on the bone [8]. Our chin filler page covers the chin alone.

What filler cannot fix, and who is a candidate?

It does not lift a jowl. Filler plumps lips, enhances shallow contours, softens creases and wrinkles, improves recessed scars, and reconstructs contour deformities [1]. Lifting sagging skin is not among those uses. For some patients surgery such as a facelift is the better approach; soft tissue fillers cannot achieve the same results, though they may delay when a facelift becomes appropriate [1]. It does not reduce fat either — a full area under the chin is not a volume deficit that filler can fill — and it is not permanent [1][5].

A jaw can look soft for reasons filler cannot reach. Volume loss along the border, or a shallow pre-jowl dip, is what it is for; a chin that sits back makes the border look short, so the chin is treated first or alongside it.

Filler is temporary [1][5], so a good candidate is an adult in good general health who accepts a result that fades. Fillers are not recommended for patients with current oral herpes or a similar infection, uncontrolled diabetes, blood-clotting problems, or lupus or other connective tissue disorders [5]. We do not perform any medical aesthetic treatments on patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Tell us about blood thinners and any filler you have had. Individual results vary.

Is jawline filler FDA-approved?

We stock four families of HA filler: the RHA Collection, Restylane, Revanesse Versa, and SkinVive (Juvéderm). Each is an FDA-approved dermal filler, and each is approved for an area other than the jawline. RHA 2, RHA 3 and RHA 4 are approved for the correction of moderate to severe dynamic facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, in adults aged 22 or older [13]. Revanesse Versa is approved for the same correction in adults 22 or older [15]. Restylane Contour is approved for cheek augmentation and correction of shape or volume differences in the midface region in people over 21 [14]. SkinVive is approved for intradermal injection to improve facial skin smoothness of the cheeks in people 21 and older [16]. None of the products above is FDA-approved for the jawline.

The FDA jawline indication belongs to a product we do not stock. Juvéderm Volux XC (VYC-25L) is indicated for subcutaneous and/or supraperiosteal injection for improvement of jawline definition in adults over the age of 21 with moderate to severe loss of jawline definition [12].

So jawline treatment at Bare.co is an off-label use of an FDA-approved filler — use outside the specific indication the product was approved for. That is lawful and common in medicine; we tell you and document it in your consent before treating, as our dermal filler overview sets out.

How long does jawline filler last?

HA fillers are temporary, lasting six months to two years depending on the filler and procedure [5]. The published jawline figures come from one product, VYC-25L — a filler we do not stock, quoted here as the evidence on jawline filler in general and not as our product. In a randomized study (157 treated, 49 controls), 69.0% of the treated group improved at least one grade on a jawline definition scale at month 6 versus 38.0% of controls [6]; more than 70% were satisfied with their lower face and jawline at month 6, pre-jowl depth improved 4.6 mm versus 2.5 mm in controls, and effectiveness was sustained up to 12 months [7]. What happens at the appointment?

You start with a consultation: goals, history, photos, and an agreed plan and price before anything is injected. A $100 deposit is collected when you book a consultation and is credited toward your treatment. It is forfeited for a no-show or a late cancellation — cancellations and rebooking need more than 72 hours' notice. For comfort we use topical numbing cream, lidocaine mixed into the filler, dental or local nerve blocks, and ice; which of those Christylynn uses depends on the technique she is using, the areas being treated and your own comfort. The injections cause some discomfort but are usually easily tolerated; the injecting itself may take as little as 15 minutes or as long as an hour, depending on how many areas are treated [2].

Afterward, avoid intense physical activity for 24 to 48 hours to limit swelling and bruising [3]. Use topical ice and massage; most early reactions improve within hours or a few days [3], and the area may be tender for a day or two [2]. Do not book days before a wedding or photos. What are the risks of jawline filler?

Common effects are swelling, bruising, bleeding, and lumps and bumps [5]. In the VYC-25L study most injection site responses were mild or moderate and resolved within 2 weeks [6]. Infection, allergic reaction, and filler migration are less frequent [5].

The serious risk is vascular: an occlusion is a potentially severe adverse outcome that can occur when filler is accidentally injected into a blood vessel [9], causing skin necrosis or, if the eye is affected, loss of eyesight [4]. Severe complications are uncommon [4] and occlusion is a relatively rare occurrence [9], but not zero. On the jawline the main vessel to avoid is the facial artery — a key danger zone for this treatment [8]. Blanching, a reticulated purple pattern, or sudden escalating pain typically appears instantly or within a few hours, and on rare occasions a few days later [9] — call us at once.

We stock hyaluronidase, and the product we use is Hylenex. Guidance is that vascular occlusion requires immediate, high-dose hyaluronidase treatment [10], and that rapid deployment rescues threatened tissue [9]; low or moderate doses treat noninflamed nodules or the Tyndall effect [10]. Dissolving cosmetic filler with it is off-label use [10] of an FDA-approved medication that carries its own risks, including allergic reaction [11]; when your allergy history is unknown we patch test first. Epinephrine is kept on site. Filler Reversal is $275 per vial of hyaluronidase. How much product does a jawline take?

The jawline is a high-volume area — more surface than a lip or chin, treated on both sides. In the VYC-25L study the average total volume, initial plus touch-up, was 6.22 mL [6]: a research figure for a product we do not stock, not a quote.
